Talent Management… Why did we change the name?

Talent Management is bollocks; it’s bollocks because it’s a word HR use to justify expensive and almost always elitist “leadership programmes” that don’t sustain and end up delivering little value, while the businesses use it to justify not focusing on their people, “sounds like HRs job?” . Its also bollocks because much like rumours of it’s existence, they are just that; rumours. Talent Management is not an expensive HR programme or a software system. It’s an attitude, a state of mind, great Talent Management does not need HR, however great HR can create the environment for it to flourish. Organisations that manage their talent well don’t need processes or systems, they hire and develop great managers and leaders who own their people development.  Great talent management is then just great people management, so why did we have to change the name?

On the whole I agree, then I met an organisation last week who have a totally involved business community – structured hi/po programmes, succession planning from top to bottom – effective coaching from top to bottom. Was the most refreshing meeting I have had in ages!

    Steve, hi

WOW they sound great, my point is that when it’s done well it’s fantastic people management, talent implies some kind of “special” activity for “special” people. By the sound of the organisation you spoke to they fundamentally believe people are the source of business value, this stories is then followed through in their actions.

The real challenge of course is that you’ve been doing this for a few years and you can name 1 company…
